Tour Plan

Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park – Enter the Savannah

Your safari begins with an early departure from Dar es Salaam, traveling westward through changing landscapes of coastal vegetation, rural villages, and rolling hills. As you approach Mikumi, the scenery opens into wide plains, marking your entrance into one of Tanzania’s most accessible yet rewarding national parks.

Mikumi is often compared to the Serengeti due to its open grasslands, which allow for excellent wildlife visibility.

Upon arrival, you head straight into your first game drive. The Mkata floodplain, the heart of the park, is covered in short grasses that attract large herds of zebras, wildebeest, and buffalo. These grazing animals, in turn, draw predators such as lions, which are often seen resting under scattered acacia trees. As the day ends, the golden light over the plains creates a classic African safari atmosphere.

Day 2: Full Day in Mikumi – Wildlife on the Open Plains

A full day in Mikumi allows you to truly understand its ecosystem. The park is part of a larger ecosystem that connects with other protected areas, creating a vast wildlife corridor.

As you drive through the plains, you’ll notice how the vegetation shapes animal behavior. The short grasses make it easier for predators to hunt, while nearby woodlands and riverine areas provide shelter for elephants, giraffes, and antelopes. Hippos can often be seen in waterholes, while birdlife thrives in the wetlands.

Because of its open terrain, Mikumi offers some of the most consistent wildlife sightings in Tanzania, making it an ideal introduction to the southern safari circuit.

Day 3: Mikumi to Ruaha National Park – Journey into the Wild Interior

After breakfast, you begin your journey toward Ruaha National Park, traveling through the highlands near Iringa. Along the way, the landscape shifts dramatically—from flat savannah to rolling hills and elevated plateaus, offering scenic views of valleys and rural countryside.

As you enter Ruaha, the environment becomes noticeably more rugged and remote. This is Tanzania’s largest national park and one of its least visited, giving you a true sense of wilderness. The vegetation here is dominated by miombo woodlands, scattered acacia trees, and ancient baobabs that stand like giants across the landscape.

An evening game drive introduces you to Ruaha’s unique wildlife, including large elephant populations and antelope species not commonly seen in northern parks.

Day 4: Full Day in Ruaha – A Predator’s Paradise

Ruaha offers a completely different safari experience compared to Mikumi. The terrain is wilder, the vegetation denser in some areas, and the wildlife more elusive yet incredibly rewarding.

The Great Ruaha River is the lifeline of the park, attracting animals from all directions, especially during the dry season when water becomes scarce.

As you explore along the riverbanks, you may see hippos submerged in the water, crocodiles basking in the sun, and large herds of elephants coming to drink. Predators such as lions, leopards, and hyenas often patrol these areas, making it one of the best places in Tanzania to observe natural hunting behavior.

Ruaha is also known for its rich biodiversity, including over 350 bird species and rare animals such as African wild dogs.

Day 5: Another Day in Ruaha – Deep Exploration of the Ecosystem

Spending another full day in Ruaha allows for deeper exploration of its diverse habitats. From dry riverbeds and rocky escarpments to dense woodlands, each area supports different species of wildlife.

The park’s vegetation plays a key role in its ecosystem. The mix of open spaces and thick bush creates ideal conditions for both grazers and browsers, supporting animals like kudu, giraffes, and impalas.

Because Ruaha is less crowded, animal behavior here feels more natural and undisturbed. You may spend extended time observing a pride of lions, tracking elephants across the plains, or simply enjoying the silence of the African wilderness.

Day 6: Ruaha to Mikumi / Transit – Changing Landscapes Again

After breakfast, you begin your journey back toward Mikumi or a nearby transit area. This drive offers a final chance to experience the changing geography of southern Tanzania, from the rugged interior back to more open landscapes.

Along the way, you’ll notice how vegetation gradually shifts again—from dense woodlands to open grasslands—highlighting the ecological diversity of this region.

This day is also an opportunity to reflect on the contrasts between Mikumi’s accessible plains and Ruaha’s raw, untouched wilderness.

Day 7: Return to Dar es Salaam – End of Safari

After breakfast, you continue your journey back to Dar es Salaam, passing through local towns and countryside. As the safari comes to an end, you leave with a deep appreciation for southern Tanzania’s unique ecosystems, where fewer crowds and vast landscapes create a more intimate connection with nature.
