Tour Plan

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut – Into the Rainforest

Your journey begins at Marangu Gate, located on the eastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After registration, your trek starts through a dense tropical rainforest, where the environment is humid, green, and alive with biodiversity.

The forest is filled with towering trees, thick undergrowth, and a wide variety of plant species adapted to high rainfall. As you walk along the well-maintained trail, you may encounter black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of birdlife.

The vegetation here is lush and dense, creating a cool and shaded environment as you ascend gradually toward Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut – Forest to Moorland Transition

Today, you leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone, where the landscape becomes more open and less dense. The vegetation begins to change noticeably, with giant heathers, lobelias, and other unique alpine plants dominating the scenery.

The air becomes thinner, and the terrain opens up, offering views of the surrounding plains and the mountain itself. As you gain altitude, you begin to feel the effects of reduced oxygen levels, making acclimatization an important part of the journey.

You arrive at Horombo Hut, located in a scenic valley with panoramic views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding landscape.

Day 3: Horombo Hut – Acclimatization Day

This day is dedicated to acclimatization, which is crucial for increasing your chances of successfully reaching the summit. You can choose to rest at Horombo Hut or take a short hike to higher elevations before returning to sleep at a lower altitude.

The surrounding environment at this elevation is part of the alpine heath zone, where vegetation is sparse and adapted to harsh conditions such as cold temperatures, strong winds, and intense sunlight.

This process of “climb high, sleep low” helps your body adjust gradually to the altitude, reducing the risk of altitude sickness and preparing you for the higher sections of the mountain.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut – Into the Alpine Desert

Today’s trek takes you into the alpine desert zone, one of the most extreme environments on Kilimanjaro. The landscape becomes dry, rocky, and almost barren, with very little vegetation due to the harsh climatic conditions.

This section of the mountain is characterized by volcanic rock formations and vast open spaces. The temperature drops significantly, and the air becomes thinner as you approach higher altitudes.

You arrive at Kibo Hut, located at the base of the summit cone, where you will rest and prepare for the final ascent. An early dinner is served before you rest briefly, as the summit climb begins around midnight.

Day 5: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Your summit attempt begins just after midnight. Under the guidance of your experienced team from Kili True Africa Adventures Ltd, you start the long and challenging ascent toward the summit.

The climb is slow and steady due to the steep terrain, low temperatures, and reduced oxygen levels. As you ascend, you pass through volcanic scree and eventually reach Gilman’s Point on the crater rim.

From here, you continue along the crater edge until you reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Watching the sunrise above the clouds from this incredible height is a truly unforgettable moment.

After celebrating your achievement, you begin your descent back to Horombo Hut, where you will spend the night after a long and rewarding day.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Descent Through the Forest

On your final day, you descend back through the familiar landscapes of Kilimanjaro. As you lose altitude, the vegetation becomes greener and denser, and the air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen.

The rainforest welcomes you once again with its lush greenery and vibrant wildlife. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you will receive your summit certificate, marking the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro climb.

You are then transferred back to your hotel, filled with pride and unforgettable memories of your achievement.
