Tour Plan

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp – Into the Rainforest

Your adventure begins at Londorossi Gate, located on the western side of Kilimanjaro. After registration, you drive to the trailhead and begin trekking through dense tropical rainforest.

This rainforest is one of Kilimanjaro’s most vibrant ecosystems, filled with tall trees, thick undergrowth, and a humid atmosphere. The vegetation is lush due to high rainfall, creating a green canopy that filters sunlight and supports rich biodiversity.

Along the trail, you may encounter colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and various bird species. The path is shaded and gradually ascends toward Mti Mkubwa Camp, where you spend your first night surrounded by the sounds of the forest.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp – Leaving the Forest Behind

As you continue your ascent, the forest begins to thin out and transition into the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation changes noticeably—giant heathers, shrubs, and unique alpine plants begin to dominate the landscape.

The terrain becomes more open, and the views expand as you approach the Shira Plateau, one of the oldest volcanic formations on Kilimanjaro. This vast plateau offers sweeping views and a sense of isolation, making it one of the most scenic areas of the trek.

The altitude begins to increase more significantly, and your body starts adjusting to the thinner air.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp – Exploring the Plateau

Today’s hike takes you deeper across the Shira Plateau, offering a gradual and scenic progression through high-altitude terrain. The vegetation here is sparse and adapted to cold temperatures and strong winds.

You will walk across open plains, volcanic rock formations, and high-altitude vegetation zones that are unique to this environment. The plateau provides excellent opportunities to enjoy panoramic views of the mountain and surrounding landscape.

This is an important acclimatization stage, allowing your body to adjust before moving into higher elevations.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower – Acclimatization Day

This is a key day for acclimatization. You ascend toward Lava Tower (4,600m), a volcanic rock formation where altitude exposure helps prepare your body for the summit.

The terrain becomes more rugged and barren, entering the alpine desert zone where vegetation is minimal due to extreme conditions. The air is thinner, and temperatures drop significantly.

After spending time at Lava Tower, you descend to Barranco Camp, located in a stunning valley surrounded by towering cliffs and unique vegetation. This descent follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle, which is essential for successful acclimatization.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp – The Famous Barranco Wall

The day begins with the ascent of the Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting and iconic sections of Kilimanjaro. Though it looks steep and intimidating, it involves scrambling and careful movement rather than technical climbing.

As you climb, you are rewarded with breathtaking views of valleys and cliffs below. After conquering the wall, the trail continues through alpine desert terrain with sparse vegetation and rocky ground.

You eventually arrive at Karanga Camp, where you rest and prepare for the final push toward the summit. This section helps further acclimatization and reduces the risk of altitude sickness.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp – Preparing for the Summit

Today’s trek is shorter but crucial. You ascend toward Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit attempt. The landscape becomes even more barren and cold, with little to no vegetation.

Barafu means “ice” in Swahili, reflecting the harsh conditions of this high-altitude camp. Here, your team prepares everything for the summit push. You rest early, as the climb to the summit begins just after midnight.

Day 7: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Your summit attempt begins in the middle of the night. Guided by your experienced team from Kili True Africa Adventures Ltd, you slowly ascend toward the summit under the stars.

The climb is physically demanding due to altitude, cold temperatures, and steep terrain. As you near the summit, you reach Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Reaching the summit at sunrise is one of the most rewarding experiences in the world. You stand above the clouds at the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating, you begin your descent to Mweka Camp, where you rest after a long and successful day.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Descent Through the Forest

Your final descent takes you back through the lush rainforest. The change in altitude brings back warmer temperatures and denser vegetation.

At Mweka Gate, you receive your summit certificate, marking your successful climb to the Roof of Africa. Your guide and team celebrate this incredible achievement with you before transferring you back to your hotel.
